“Explore the Monster” track tours offered year round at Dover

While the Monster Mile sits quietly now waiting for NASCAR’s return to the track in 2010, fans can still visit Dover International Speedway and get a behind the scenes look at the facility with track historian George Keller.

Keller, 63, proudly serves as Dover’s track historian. It’s a title he has more than earned – Keller has not missed a race weekend at Dover since the track was built in 1969. He celebrated his 80th NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race in Dover this past September.

A retired history teacher from Dover High School, Keller now works part-time at the track and leads the twice-a-week “Explore the Monster” tours.

A guided tour includes stops at the Monster Bridge, the Monster Monument at Victory Plaza, presented by AAA, Victory Lane, where some of the sport’s biggest names have hoisted the monster trophy, on the track and down pit road, in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series garage, a visit inside the Infield Media Center, and much more.

Tours are conducted on most Tuesdays at 10 a.m. and Thursdays at 2 p.m., weather permitting. Tours cost $ 7 per person for all ages and tour participants are eligible to use their admission pass to receive $ 7 off any 2010 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race ticket (May 16 & Sept. 26, 2010).

Cash or credit cards are accepted at the ticket office window and participants can register in person on the day of the tour. Fans are encouraged to park closest to the building in parking lot E. 

All tours begin and end in the ticket office lobby. A shuttle bus will be available to transport guests from the ticket office to the Monster Monument and entrance to the track.
